Star Trek is clearly superior - specifically the DS9 episodes after Sisco went cueball.

Apples and oranges in my opinion. Battlestar Galactica is a drama centered show that uses space travel’s iconic images to tell their stories. Star Trek was science fiction that used drama to tell their stories. So, with that in mind, Battlestar Galactica is a better non-science fiction drama series. Where drama was Star Trek’s second form, its first form was exploring ideas. However, some of the later series did wander a bit from strong story telling and started to embrace sensationalism over ideas… but that’s a different discussion. :-)

So with regard to Duane's comments -

If you set BSG in 2007, would it just be another drama on FX(edgier stuff)?

And if you set ST in 2007, would there be anything left?

BSG kicks Star Trek's butt. The new BSG simply uses Sci-Fi as a vehicle to explore today's outrages in social and political venues. Especially poignant were the episodes dealing with the treatment of prisoners, temporally placed against the Abu Ghraib and Gitmo prisoner abuse issues. Further political commentary could be seen throughout the series so far, including the rights to fair trial, etc., etc. Star Trek never did, and never would, be that edgy.

I took me until the end of season two of the new BSG to realize I liked it more than original Star Trek. It's just such a good show, even though it's more drama than scifi. Star Trek never had BSG level writing.

I like DS9 and even ST:TNG better, but if I have to go ANY form of Star Trek, then I have to answer yes, BSG is better than some forms of Star Trek. Star Trek V anyone? Not even sure that qualifies as entertainment...

Follow-up to Sean’s comments –

You hit it right on the head.

Once you remove the science fiction, Star Trek has no story. It is based on exploring ideas. BSG on the other hand is just another good drama show that uses the sci-fi like setting to expose ideas on current issues. However, they are current issues, so not science fiction.

Unlike drama, science fiction on the other hand is thoughtful speculation on the tangible or intangible of known science and thus a vehicle for discussions for decades to come. It is far harder to write good science fiction than it is to write good drama. To have good science fiction it has to have good drama as well as sound scientific thinking. Star Trek was one of the few shows that took that on.

To the other comment from anonymous -

Edgy has a short life in either drama or science fiction. Once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it. The shock value is over so I don’t consider that a lasting form in a show. In addition, Star Trek did cover those issues. They just didn’t spill blood all over the screen, show graphic torturing, or make loud scenes of destruction to draw your attention to it. However, if filling the screen with human suffering is the only way to get a point across to people… it’s our butts that will be kicked!
